From past few years North India, specially Haryana, is facing tough problem of honor killing. And from past few months KHAP panchayats are stressing on this issue & putting pressure on politicians for change in Hindu Code bill.
First of all, whether SAGOTRA marriages are legal or illegal, as per our customs or against it, the main questions is who authorizes KHAP panchayats to give verdict of death to anyone on this earth. Even in case of Kasab, the death sentence given by special court is not valid till it is getting approved by HC how come a pity institute of few villages can have right to execute someone for a mistake which is not putting society or residents of country under danger. But our spineless politicians who can do any thing for vote, instead of demanding arrest of those who are responsible for murder of Manoj & Babli, supporting the demands of KHAPs.
Trying to show their demand have scientific reason, they provide some facts from scientist / medicos about the genetic problems which can occur due to marriage with in blood relations. Now I am unable to understand whether these north Indians only are prone to these genetic disorders, as Muslim, Christians & even hindus in south India marry in their relation & they don’t see any genetic problems. Yes Incest relation is not good as per reports, & that is already illegal as per Hindu marriage act. In western countries also they have strict laws to deal with it.
Another point on which I want to bring to light is as per scientific facts, cross breads are better then others, & on this ground only SAGOTRA marriages are being opposed by KHAPs, OK in that case will they accept inter-caste marriage or inter-religion marriages. There is no chance of SAGOTRA marriage. Now here same scientific laws will be unacceptable. This is pure case of convenience regarding facts, if it suits us then I am for it else not.
Those who don’t have idea about gotra, all hindus are supposed to be sons & daughters of 8 rishis, now one gotra is belong to family of one rishi. Thus they all are brothers & sisters. If I am not wrong, these rishis came later in picture, first it was only swayambhu Manu & satrupa only available on earth, thus we all (even those 8 rishis) are brothers & sisters. Thus we can’t marry anyone. So what to do? The right thing is to put a limit for any thing, and hindu marriage act had did it correctly, relation in 5 generations from father side & 3 generations from mother side is not legal.
Second problem is marriage within Village, at time of swami dayanand & previous I don’t think villages were of population is thousands. Now not only population of villages increased, many people shifted to these villages due to financial reasons (Jobs, business etc…) they may not be belonging to that village, forget village region itself might be migrated from another state earlier. Now in this period when girls parents are under tremendous pressure due to heavy dowry demands from grooms family (even though sex ratio is down drastically) and girls are always subject to ill treatment (at least fear is always there), isn't it wise idea to marry someone to whom we know very well & can be ensure about protection & well being of our girls later in life.
These KHAPs are very active when it comes to inter cast marriage or SAGOTRA marriage terming it illegal, they keep mum on dowry issues, the unnecessary expenditures being met to show off at time of marriage, or consumption of liquor at these auspicious occasion. As per tradition, dowry used to be given by brides family a gift to start a new life, they used to give it because at that time girls didn't have share in ancestral property. And that all material use to belong to girl only (known as stri-dhan), it used to be considered sin to use her property by boy for his purpose. Now, Groom family insists what they want, not what is girl’s requirement. And the expenditure of marriages is increasing like anything in just to show off. Now everybody is trying to emulate Karan Johar's filmy marriage in their ceremony, people forgot the simple & sober but graceful marriage we used to have earlier (if anyone want can see Nadiya ke paar), where entire neighborhood lend their support for success of event, now everything is out sourced for perfection, but in this drive we are putting more thrust on show off and matching other’s marriage show, which leads to debt and other problems. Doesn’t it a big problem on which KHAPs should look at. Akal takht had taken note of this issue & already started taking steps to reduce marriage expenses. And regarding consumption of liquor, it can’t be justified; there is no hue and cry over these issues from KHAPs on these issues as these are having no implication on health. SAGOTRA marriage may have its implications, a few percentage of child may have health problem, but after consumption of liquor 100 percent people loose control over brain, it’s proved. Then why not first to target Liquor consumption?
Now on Naveen Jindal, a management graduate from a reputed institute at international level, is supporting these nonsense demands, what to do with them? Are not they perfect case for social boycott? Thanks god, KHAPs don’t have much control on vote bank at national level, Congress realizes that supporting KHAP may prove for them costly in other parts of country, thus forced Naveen to keep his mouth shut.
